i came to ottawa in the fall of 2017, and now it is my sixth year living in this city. i have lived in many apartments during my stay in ottawa, and it never felt like home until the start of the pandemic. due to china's complicated protocols and travel restrictions, i have not returned to my hometown for three years. the longevity of staying in ottawa allowed me to get lots of home gadgets and furniture that transformed my living space from a university student dorm room to a relatively home-like space.

gathering pieces to decorate the apartment allowed me to build a bond between myself and those gadgets. the bond makes me feel at home. no matter where i go, no matter how many places i moved, the aesthetic, scent, and associated sounds are always the same.

luckily, during my stay in ottawa during the pandemic, i have the chance to be a parent of two lovely pets, huanhuan——the dog, and pupu——the cat. and these two lovely being brought some of the most important sounds into my life.

through various interactions between me, my pets, and my gadgets, each area in my home produces a unique set of sounds. and those sounds made up important existence in my memory of home, also part of the definition of what i define as home. home is full of sounds that i know well. just by listening to the sounds of home, i can easily know what item the sound is coming from, which area it is located in, and what has been done with it.
